About The Authority
Western Townships Utilities Authority (WTUA) was incorporated by the Charter Townships of Canton, Northville and Plymouth under the provisions of Michigan Public Act 233 of 1985.  WTUA was established to:

  • Construct and operate a wastewater transportation system and develop a solid waste management program to meet the present and future residential, business and recreational needs of the member Townships; and

  • Provide an alternate sewer service by directing the wastewater flow of the member Townships to a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant in Ypsilanti (Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority); and

  • Introduce increased volume of highly treated wastewater to the Rouge River system and to help cleanse it of pollution and restore water flows, providing a positive impact on the Rouge River system; and

  • To assist in alleviating flooding problems.

Mission Statement
Our purpose is to provide wastewater services in an efficient and cost effective manner. We are committed to seeking joint solutions, together with our member communities in an environmentally responsible and safe fashion.

Benefits of the System
The benefits of the WTUA wastewater transportation system are far-reaching.  It has  a positive regional impact on over 1.5 million residents in the Western Wayne area.

The system improves the conditions of the Rouge River to support aquatic life and wildlife.  It enhances public areas for swimming, fishing and recreational boating.  It  improves the aesthetics of lakes and waterways.  It also reduces sewer overflows and basement floodings.

In essence, the WTUA wastewater transportation system  provides a better environment in which to live and work.  It enhances parks, lakes, rivers and streams for use and enjoyment.  And, most importantly, provides quality of life for present needs and for future generations to come.
